Images of Real and Imaginary Worlds
Brazilian College of Higher Studies
CENABIO will host an exhibition of images from the Lectures of the Fernando de Sousa Barros Chair on Images of the Real and Imaginary Worlds of the Brazilian College of Higher Studies of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (CBAE/UFRJ), coordinated by professor Adalberto Vieyra, which took place between June 2021 and December 2022 at the CBAE headquarters, Av Rui Barbosa, 762 – Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro. The exhibition was organized by professors Claudia Mermelstein and Manoel Luis Costa and with the support of the director of CBAE, Professor Ana Célia Castro.
The objective of the Chair was to use images as a point of convergence for various types of knowledge, particularly in the area of activity of CENABIO (National Center for Structural Biology of UFRJ), but also in the human and social sciences. During the Chair’s series of conferences, remarkable images appeared, among which we selected some to record this panorama, either because of the relevance of their content or because of their beauty. The exhibition features cells, pollen grains, brains, people, animals and plants, heartbeats and representations of mathematical equations, imaged by various methodologies, from electron microscopes to brushes and computers. One of the conclusions of the Chair was the demonstration of the communication power of images, certainly in part due to their aesthetic appeal. We share with the public our pleasure with these images, which contribute to overcoming barriers between areas of knowledge.
