Meeting UMA

Advanced Microscopy Unit

The Advanced Microscopy Unit (UMA) of the National Center for Structural Biology and Bioimaging (CENABIO/UFRJ) is the most complete microscopy facility in Latin America, providing a wide variety of advanced equipment in the areas of light microscopy, electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy to the academic community and to the private sector; moreover, it houses two optical tweezers and an X-ray diffractometer.

The UMA has a scientific body renowned for biological specimen imaging. It has a highly qualified staff operating various microscopy techniques to support users in acquiring their high-quality micrographs. Among the several techniques at their disposal, one can highlight confocal microscopy with spectral detection in 32 channels; super-resolution light microscopy with structured illumination, such as PALM (Photoactivated Localization Microscopy) and STORM (Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy); multiphoton microscopy; total internal reflectance microscopy; optical tweezers; atomic force microscopy; super-high resolution scanning electron microscopy equipped with a cryostage (Cryogenic Scanning Electron Microscopy);  microscopy analysis with X-ray diffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS); high-resolution transmission electron microscopy equipped with a cryostage (CryogenicTransmission Electron Microscopy) and an automated system for cryo-electron tomography.

UMA’s location, attached to the Health Sciences Center/CCS complex.
