The Cryomicroscopy Platform of the Advanced Microscopy Unit (UMA) at CENABIO was designed and implemented with FAPERJ funding and aims to support research with biological samples that utilize cryomicroscopy as an analytical tool. Furthermore, we seek to consolidate a cryomicroscopy network in Brazil.

These activities and the investments involved depend on financial resources for their continuity, considering this is a highly complex technique with high operational costs. Therefore, the use of the cryomicroscopes on this Platform is subject to contributions previously defined by the Cryomicroscopy Steering Committee. Furthermore, the necessary supplies for analysis (grids, clip rings, and C-clips) must be provided by the users, and the samples must be brought ready-to-use. Therefore, cryofixation is the user’s responsibility. The daily cost of microscope use will be provided upon request.

To use the Platform’s equipment, you must register your project with our Unit. If you haven’t registered a project yet, CLICK HERE.

Additionally, using the platform also requires completing the Cryomicroscopy Usage Form (link below), which must provide relevant information about the application of the technique in your project, with an emphasis on its scientific relevance. Please note that all fields on the form are mandatory, especially the current stage of your research, which must be demonstrated by submitting previous results and images obtained using transmission electron microscopy.

The selection of equipment is also mandatory.

The following are the usage specifications for each equipment:

Titan Krios: SPA and cryotomography analyses;
Aquilos 2: preparation of cryolamellae for cryotomography analysis on the Titan Krios;
Tecnai TF20 FEG 200 kV: imaging of nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, etc. using a cryoholder side entry.
