The Cryomicroscopy Platform is in progress!

CENABIO received funds from the State of Rio de Janeiro Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ) for the installation of a state-of-the-art cryomicroscopy infrastructure, consolidating Brazil’s important role in world microscopy.

To incorporate this entire complex of equipment, a building with an anti-vibration system, acoustic and electromagnetic insulation is being built, which will be ready in 2023/1. The new cryomicroscopy platform will have all the necessary infrastructure to house the acquired microscopes, as well as structure for technologists, professors and visitors, in addition to being attached to the current building of the Advanced Microscopy Unit at CENABIO/UFRJ.

CENABIO will have the following microscopes:

[1] Gen 4 TFS Krios (TEM) with direct electron detection camera, power filter and phase plates;

[2] Double-beam cryomicroscope, cryo-FIB-SEM Acchylos, for making cryolamels that will be observed and analyzed by cryotomography.

With these acquisitions, CENABIO/UFRJ will be able to carry out the techniques of:

[a] High resolution cryoscan;

[b] Correlative cryomicroscopy;

[c] Cryo-lamella preparation;

[d] Cryoelectron tomography;

[e] Single particle.

This technical expansion will increase CENABIO/UFRJ’s ability to image all types of samples at the highest level, from live cells to frozen samples.
